What to Expect....

My services include:

A Free Consultation
This is where we get together and chat. I will tell you about myself and my midwifey experience. You can ask any questions that you want, tell me about yourself, why you are thinking about homebirth etc. There are no obligations at this visit. It only helps you decide if I am the Midwife for you, or gives you a better idea about what homebirth is about.

Initial Prenatal Visit
This is your first prenatal with me. This visit usually lasts at least an hour. We will go over health history, birth history, informed concent and we will talk about lab work. From this visit on, I will be on call for you 24 hours a day should any concerns arise.

Prenatal Care
Prenatal care will go from the initial visit until the birth. For the first 32 weeks, we will meet once a month. From 32-37 weeks, we will meet twice a month. From 37 weeks on, we will meet weekly. Each prenatal visit is 45 minutes to an hour. We will discuss, nutrition, emotions, concerns etc. I will take your blood pessure, palpate your belly to asses fetal growth and position and listen to fetal heart tones with a fetascope or doppler. Vaginal exams are not routine. At these visits, you will meet my assistant who will be attending your birth with me. Feel free to bring family or friends who will be attending your birth as your support. Your children are very welcome at these visits.

Birth
By the time you begin the birth process, we will have gotten to know each other well. Our (mine as well as my assistants) goal is to assist you in the best possible way, helping make your birth smooth, empowering and a positive experience you will never forget. Our goal is also to do everything we can to help your baby's transition be as gentle and straightforward as possible. Throughout the birth, we will check fetal heart tones, encourage you to eat as necessary and stay hydrated. We give continuous emotional support as needed and asses the health of both you and your baby thoughtout the entire process. If we see anything out of the ordinary, we make suggestions, talk to you and anyone else present about the options we all have before making any decisions. We strive to be safe, kind and respectful in all situations.

After the baby and placenta are born and we know everything and everyone are doing well, we allow time for you and your baby to be together to stare at eachother and marvel in the wonders of creation. We encourage and assist with breastfeeding if necessary. We make sure everyone is well fed. We do a full placental and new born exam and offer an herbal bath to you and baby to get cleaned up and aid in the body to heal a usually sore perineum as well as the umbilical sight. We will stay for at least three hours after the birth and longer if we feel it necessary. If anything is out of the ordinary, we will discuss it and your options at length.

Postpartum
Our first postpartum visit will be the next day after the birth. We will check you and the baby over to make sure you are both healthy and doing well. We will discuss any concerns you have, assist with breastfeeding and talk about the birth. The first few days after the birth can be very emotional and we will stive to support you in whatever way we can. I am still on call for you 24 hours a day.

The second postpartum visit will be 3-4 days later, though if any concerns arise, it would be earlier. We again asses the wellness of you and your baby and discuss any concerns you or I have.

At two weeks postpartum, I will come for another visit to check in and see how everyone is adjusting and to check in with any concerns you may have.

The last visit is the six week visit. This visit takes place at my office. This visit is mostly a fun one. We get to sum up the whole pregnancy and birth, visit with the baby and share any thoughts. I will offer to do a PAP (ok maybe its not all fun!) and we will say goodbye (though I encourage all mothers to keep in touch with me and stop in to see me anytime!)
